An event for people with dementia and their families and carers is being held in Brighton on Wednesday September 15. The day will include information and advice, workshops and an interactive session run by a theatre company.
One in every 100 people is thought to have dementia which means that 2,500 Brighton and Hove residents are living with the condition.
The “Living with Dementia Together’ event is the fourth in a series that runs until March 2011. It has been set up to provide a friendly and informal environment where local people can learn more about dementia, share experiences and find out about the wide range of support that is available in the city. This is a free event and lunch is provided.
One of the highlights of the day’s agenda is an interactive session organised by the Ladder to the Moon theatre company. The group’s re-enactment of Casablanca at a previous event was very popular and people are welcome to take part or just observe if they prefer.
Kathy Caley, Commissioner for Long Term Conditions and Independence at NHS Brighton and Hove, says:
“These events provide valuable opportunities for people to tell us what they need from local services so that they can continue to live as independently as possible. Since beginning this series we have seen an increase in the number of people with dementia who are attending and their feedback has been very positive.
“There is a lot of practical help and treatment available in the city and it is vital that people who have early stage dementia know where to find this support.
“We encourage everyone with an interest in dementia to attend, whether this is their first event or they have already been to previous ones in this series.”
The event on Wednesday 15 September runs from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Brighthelm Centre in North Road.
