A GP is a doctor who provides general primary and preventative care to patients. Patients may see a GP for a wide range of conditions, many of which can be diagnosed and treated by the GP. If a doctor senses that a condition may require specialised care, he or she can offer referrals to specialists.
Find a GP on NHS Choices website.
Your local general practitioners' (GP) surgery provides a wide range of family health services, including:
- advice on health problems
- vaccinations
- examinations and treatment
- prescriptions for medicines
- and referrals to other health services and social services.
If your condition is not urgent, you can expect to see a doctor within two working days or a health professional, such as a nurse, within one working day. If you don't need an appointment within two working days, you can also book in advance if this is more convenient for you. It is important to keep your appointment, or notify the surgery if you have to cancel or change it.
GP-led health centres
These make it more convenient for patients to visit their GP. Any patient will be able to pre-book an appointment or simply walk in and see a GP or nurse. The GP-led health centre in Brighton and Hove is the Brighton Station Centre, see their website for details.
Out of Hours (OOH) GP
Outside normal surgery hours you can still phone your GP surgery, but you'll be directed to an out-of-hours service. The OOH period is from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.
